Enrolling in a training program is very easy. Just choose the classes you want from the Fort McMurray First Aid website and use the form on the same site to sign up. Students can also sign up for a class through e-mail or telephone call. Walk-ins during business hours are also highly encouraged.
Course fees
Rates are the lowest in Alberta. They include taxes, certificates, and training manuals – paid in full during enrolment so trainees don’t have to worry about additional expenses. Should a student drop out, as long as a 72-hour notice was given he or she will be entitled to a full refund.
First aid training
First aid training programs last 14-16 hours, covering a comprehensive list of topics. Lessons include emergency medical services (EMS), wound care, and addressing injuries that compromise breathing circulation. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillation (AED) are also included.
Stand-alone classes
CPR/AED stand-alone classes are also offered at Fort McMurray First Aid, in three different levels: A, C, and HCP. These levels last 4, 5, and 6 hours respectively. CPR HCP focuses on skill training on the use of bag valve masks and rescue maneuvers on adult, child, and infant victims.
Private classes
Fort McMurray First Aid offers private instructors with hourly rates. All trainers in all the facilities are trained by St Mark James. You can book them for training at home or for events like conferences. Just send an e-mail or give a call to inquire about booking them.
Certificates
Students receive certificate cards upon completion of a program. To pass, a student is required to have completed attendance, at least 75 percent on the written exam, and good skill return demonstration. Wall-mount certificates may be requested as well.
Certificates are only valid for three years and are renewable, if current and prerequisites are met, through recertification programs. Standard first aid and CPR recertification takes 8 hours and includes CPR level C recertification.

Helping a person with an asthma attack
- Keep victim calm.
- Assist victim to sit down.
- Ask if they have an inhaler and if you can get it for them. Children will often have a spacer to help them with the inhaler.
- Encourage the victim to take deep breaths.
- Stay with them for a few minutes because it will take a short while (around 3 to 5 minutes) for the medication to take effect.
