As a certified first aid instructor, program developer, and someone who has worked directly with Alberta OH&S, I’ve trained people from all walks of life — from young parents to seniors to professionals required to certify for work. Over the years, I’ve received a wide range of questions from individuals curious about first aid courses in Lethbridge, Alberta.
In this post, I’ll share answers to a few of the most common questions I hear — so you can feel informed and confident when signing up for your training.
👶 Will This Course Prepare Me to Save My Child in an Emergency?
Yes — if you choose the right course.
For parents, grandparents, and childcare providers, I recommend enrolling in Standard First Aid or Standard Childcare First Aid, ideally with CPR Level C. This level of CPR training prepares you to respond to cardiac and respiratory emergencies in infants, children, and adults — including situations like choking, unconsciousness, or breathing difficulties.
These courses equip you with hands-on skills and decision-making tools to help you remain calm and act quickly when it matters most.
🧓 I’m 70 Years Old — Can I Still Take First Aid Training?
Absolutely! First aid training is for everyone — regardless of age.
Many participants in their 60s, 70s, and even older have successfully completed their courses. The main physical requirement is the ability to perform effective chest compressions during CPR practice. If you have arthritis, back issues, or limited upper-body strength, that part may be challenging — but instructors are trained to support you, modify activities as needed, and guide you through the skills.
Whether you’re taking the course for personal preparedness or to support a loved one, we strongly encourage you to give it a try.
👨🏫 If I Have a First Aid Certificate, Can I Teach First Aid to Others?
Great question — and the answer is: not yet.
While earning your first aid certificate (basic, intermediate, or advanced) gives you life-saving knowledge, it doesn’t authorize you to teach official first aid and CPR courses to others.
To become an OH&S-approved first aid instructor in Alberta, you must:
- Complete a certified instructor training course
- Undergo formal evaluations and be signed off by a qualified instructor-trainer
- In some organizations (e.g., St. Mark James Training), the instructor pathway can involve up to 80 hours of training, practice teaching, and assessment
It’s a rewarding path — and if you’re interested in becoming an instructor, we’d be happy to discuss how to get started.
Take the First Step Toward Certification
Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, senior, or professional — first aid training empowers you with the confidence and skills to act in emergencies and potentially save lives.
If you’re in Lethbridge, Alberta, we’d love to help you get certified through one of our OH&S-approved first aid and CPR programs.
